But this isn’t always the case. Osteopathic massage, a term coined by David Zulak, RMT at Therapeutic Massage Counsel in Brantford, attempts to address the body in its entirety. It is a combination of the classical manual therapy of osteopathy (U.S. and U.K.) and Swedish massage.

The benefits of this whole-body approach are wide-ranging and seen throughout the entire body. One of the greatest effects of osteopathic massage is how it increases one’s overall health or vitality. Increased vitality means your body can now direct its energy toward sustaining good health, increasing its ability to heal and repair and improving immune function.

But how, specifically, is this done? Osteopathic massage frees any restrictions encountered within your muscles and joints. This immediately affects your posture and your mobility. Improved posture and mobility, in turn, help remove any blockages or restrictions in the flow of your blood, lymph or nerve.

This increased flow of nutrients and improved communication (nerve signals and immune functions) provides what is needed to sustain, build and repair the tissues quickly and effectively, whether muscle, bone, joints or organs. Furthermore, the immune system needs to quickly receive notice of disease or infection wherever it is in the body. Improved flow to the tissues means improved flow from them as well. The immune system receives notice sooner and generates a speedier response to any threat. Increased flow also helps expedite the removal of waste products or toxins from the body.

Osteopathic massage isn’t simply the application of certain techniques. Instead, it is a way of seeing, understanding and communicating with the body. It is specifically tailored to each individual client.

Most treatment sessions begin with a brief assessment of posture, alignment of the spine, muscle balance and joint function. The therapist often uses gentle rhythmic motions, rocking, oscillations and rotational movements to help locate restrictions within the body. Once found, they are treated. The therapy can be done with loose clothing on or the body draped, as in Swedish massage. The entire body is addressed, with focused treatment of specific areas of concern.

You don’t have to be a professional meteorologist to know that the warm winds of spring are here to stay. If you have been cooped up all winter like us we are sure that you are looking for an excuse to make your way out side and there is no better excuse then to clean and protect your Car, Truck, or SUV’s exterior finish.

Washing a car is a lot more involved than simply turning on a hose and spraying water onto your vehicle. Car care professionals recommend washing the vehicle beginning with the top and working to the bottom, one section at a time, although some enthusiasts are adamant that beginning with the lower sections is a better method.

The important fact is that each area of the car receives the following treatments. First rinse the section of car with water to remove loose dirt. If you have access to a power washer this is the perfect application for it. Then wash the section of the vehicle at a time by rubbing surface gently to loosen dirt with a wash mitt, sponge, or car wash towel and follow it up with a rinse.

After the final rinse, wipe the excess water from the vehicle surface to prevent water spotting. Keep the towel or chamois clean of dirt to help prevent scratching and wipe the vehicle lightly to soak up water without tarnishing the finish.

A major component to detailing your vehicle is the application of wax to its exterior. Begin by applying small amount of wax (either liquid or paste) to the applicator sponge and spread it evenly on one section of the car in a thin and even layer. Allow the wax to haze (which takes about a minute or two, then buff it to a perfect shine with a clean soft towel, rotating the contact surface of the towel frequently for best results.

Perhaps you have been trying to think of ways to spruce up your front or back yard, but you are not sure how to accomplish that with the limited amount of time you have.

Fortunately, there are some perennial plants available that add beauty, interest and stunning colour to your garden without requiring you to spend a lot of time feeding, watering, dividing or replanting. Here are a few low-maintenance perennials that you may want to consider planting in your garden this spring:

Hosta

The hosta grows easily in the shade – although some sunshine is preferred – and is relatively low-maintenance, because its abundant foliage lies low to the ground and prevents weeds from growing around it. Hostas do need to be fertilized, watered and protected from certain pests, including slugs. But they grow easily, are available in more than 3,000 varieties and look better with age as their colour intensifies, leaves get bigger and the leaf textures and markings become more defined.

Daylily

The daylily thrives in many different conditions, including tree shade; just make sure it receives at least six hours of sun. This plant gets its name from its lily-shaped flowers, which only bloom for one day, wither and are then replaced with a new flower on the same stalk. You can find daylilies in almost every colour imaginable. They are relatively easy-care; just fertilize them in the spring and remember to divide them every three to five years, when you notice that the plants are producing fewer and smaller flowers.

Echinacea

The Echinacea, or coneflower, is one of the hardiest and sturdiest perennials around. This plant prefers dry, sunny locations and requires little upkeep. In the absence of rain, just water it once a week. The Echinacea blooms all summer long (July to October) and is known for attracting butterflies and birds. While its traditional colour is purple, today you can find Echinacea in many other colours, including a pinkish-purple, orange, white and yellow.

Antler Garden Centre offers a wide selection of low maintenance, one-gallon perennials for only $5. New plants arrive weekly, so visit often and check out the many varieties that are available. Which type should you choose? Your final decision will depend on the type of trimming job you need to do and the size of your yard. Here are some guidelines to help you choose the right trimmer for your needs.

Gas trimmers

Gas trimmers are ideal if you have a large piece of property to maintain. For a large yard with lots of weeds or brush, a gas trimmer will offer more power than electric or cordless models and will not have to be plugged into an outlet or recharged. Some models are heavier and noisier than others and require the additional job of mixing oil and gas for fuel. For heavy and extended use, look for a lightweight gas trimmer with a commercial- grade engine and an easy-start feature.

Electric trimmers

Corded electric trimmers are convenient because they are easy to start and relatively quiet and you don’t have the hassle of mixing and adding fuel. However, they are less powerful than their gas counterparts and can only reach as far as your extension cord will allow. So if you have a small to average-sized yard and few weeds to deal with, a corded electric model is the ideal choice.

Cordless trimmers

A cordless trimmer frees you from both the limitations of an extension cord and the noise and exhaust of a gas engine. These trimmers run on an internal battery, which recharges through an electrical outlet. Because you are not limited by the length of an extension cord, you can use a cordless trimmer on a larger yard, as long as you do your research and choose a model that will stay charged long enough to complete your whole trimming job. Cordless trimmers are still not as heavy-duty as gas-powered ones, so they are best for yards with few weeds.

Need help choosing a weed trimmer? Antler Services carries a large selection of powerful, high-performance models from ECHO Power Equipment, which feature commercial-grade components and a lightweight, ergonomic design. Without the right lighting in your home, it can be uncomfortable and difficult to accomplish your daily tasks. The right lighting adds ambience, beauty and accessorizes your home.

When choosing lighting options, you’ll need to consider the mood you want to create, what you’ll be using the room for and take stock of the practical needs that your lighting will fill. With so many lighting choices out there, it can make the process overwhelming. Using a combination of lighting in most rooms of your home will help you to get the maximum benefits from your space.

Task lighting, or direct lighting, is good for home offices, kitchens, living rooms and other work spaces. Under-counter lights in a kitchen, or a floor lamp in the living room, provide great task lighting options. Indirect lighting gives the room the overall ambience and usually includes a fixture, such as a ceiling fixture or wall sconce. Chandelier lights that hang from a ceiling add beauty and elegance to a dining room and create a luxurious dining experience. Beautiful table lamps also add ambience and decorate your space beautifully. They are perfect for living rooms and bedrooms and are great options for when you don’t want to turn on the bright, over-head ceiling light.

Sleep ‘n Comfort Centre has a wide selection of lighting options for all of your home décor needs. Their experienced associates will help you choose the best lighting for your home, to give you maximum comfort and style. Visit www.sleepncomfort.ca for more information on how Sleep ‘n Comfort Centre can help you with all of your lighting needs.

Adding a new pet to your family brings joy and happiness to your home. Adopting a pet from an animal rescue not only saves a pet’s life, it is also rewarding to know that you helped to save an animal. May is pet adoption month and spring is a great time to adopt a new furry friend. You may have some concerns about adopting a rescue pet, but with a bit of research and information, it will be an easy and rewarding process.

When adopting a rescue pet, it is important to find a location that has a no-kill policy, says Angie Witten of Pet Culture. Witten also says that facilities that use foster homes—rather than a shelter—are better, because foster care provides dogs with the opportunity to be socialized in a nurturing environment. Because the foster family gets to know the dog very well, they can make a much more informed decision on the best permanent home for the pet and can ensure a good fit.

When choosing your pet, you need to decide on the type of dog that will best suit your family and lifestyle. You’ll particularly need to consider the breed, size and activity level of dog that is best for you. You’ll also need to think about your home environment. Do you live in an apartment, a house, or the country? This will greatly influence the size of dog you should adopt. Your lifestyle is also an important consideration—your work schedule, the age of all family members living in your household and your activity level. Witten says that you shouldn’t consider getting a dog if you cannot keep your new pet indoors.

When looking for a rescue site, a website like www.petfinder.com will give you a list of you many different locations all across Ontario. In Brantford, visit www.ontariocaninerescue.com to find Brantford’s local shelter.

Pet Culture has everything you need for your new pet, from premium pet foods to dog toys, leashes and all other pet supplies. Their pet care specialists participate in specialized industry training programs and will help you with every aspect of pet care. Visit www.facebook.com/petculture for more information about how Pet Culture can turn any pet into a cherished member of the family.

A good understanding of family dynamics is a great tool to have, both to be successful in the field and as away to understand the way people relate to each other better.

Here’s a quick overview to give you an idea of what family dynamics are all about.

The experts in the field will tell you that families are a lot more complicated than they first appear to be and they are held together by some strong emotional attachments. Family dynamics is all about the ways that individuals react to each other and the way the entire family structure works as a whole. Many modern families are different from the more traditional mother-father-children nuclear families that were the norm several years ago and that’s why there needs to be way to measure and predict how well these dynamics will work.

Regardless of the model, communication is one of the most important factors influencing family dynamics. Effective listening skills need to be developed and taught here. There are other factors that play a part including family stability. The effects of the family unit’s financial position as well as illness and/or death are also critical to understanding how a family will function.

Of course, having an adult or youth member that is facing developmental challenges will affect the dynamic as well. Having a working knowledge of how family dynamics will make you a more effective Developmental Service Worker.

“There are different types of pool pumps and filters so you need to determine the size of pump you will need for your pool and how long you are gong to run the pump for,” he said. “You need to circulate a set amount of water through the filter a day.”

If the pump will be used for only eight hours a day, it will need to be larger so it can efficiently remove bacteria and particles that ultimately make their way into the pool.

“Variable speed pumps are available now that can run full speed through the day and half speed at night,” Gregg says. “You will also need a filter that is conditional on the size of pool and hours of operation so that it can filter out all contaminants, keep the water clear and remove any small debris.”

Filter options include sand filters that trap debris in the sand. These filters require backwashing about every two weeks to clear the sand of debris. The sand will also require cleaning every two years and should be replaced every six to seven years.

“Some municipalities do not allow backwash of pool water onto the street, so if that is the case, people could go to a cartridge filter,” Gregg suggests. “Cartridge filters have paper or cloth membranes that provide much finer filtration, which equates to clearer water.”

Cartridge filters only require disassembling and rinsing once or twice a year.

Although some pool owners want to cut down on hydro usage during peak daylight hours, turning off the pump when the sun is shining will do more harm than good.

“Pumps should be running during daylight hours because that is when the heat of the sun is on the pool and is creating issues with the top six inches of water and the chemicals that are being used,” says Gregg.

They don’t call it the living room for nothing. As one of the most multifaceted spaces in your home, there’s always an accent or finishing touch that will bring out more of the vision that you have for this area. Whether you’re using it as a central point for family gatherings, a focal area for watching television or just an informal place to meet and chat, here are a few additions that don’t cost a lot but work wonders with your colours and decorating scheme.

These are difficult economic times for some but you don’t need to sacrifice elegance for affordability. Replacing the luxury of silk draperies or putting them off for another time is easier when you put some sheer panels up. These tend to be more cost efficient than silk but they have the same elegant look.

If you’ve got a few more dollars to spend and you don’t mind getting involved with textiles, looking for and finding a printed rug can be that elusive element you’re looking for to compliment any living room.

Side tables are another accent that can show off the other choices that you’ve made when it comes to furniture. There’s no need to spend a ton of money here either. Getting the right pieces can be about staying simple and affordable.

If you’re looking for mood lighting or illumination to read by in the living room, table lamps are just as essential as the side tables they often sit on. These accents are generally cost friendly and they supply that added touch to your living room.

Because of their popularity, there is an amazing array of recliners on the market today. There’s enough to choose from to suit every room, taste and need, so to get the one that’s right for you it’s good to have a starting point to build on.

That said, there are basically three styles of recliners. If you’re looking to save money but still want to be able to enjoy the comfort of one of these chairs, the two position recliner might be your best bet. It does have parts that are covered with leather, but other spots that are covered in vinyl are one of the major reasons this chair is less expensive than some of the other options. The selection of materials these chairs come in is limited.

A more popular model is the rocker or wall-saver. So named because you can sit upright in it and rock, these models also have a variety of different angles the chair moves into making this model one of the more common choices on the market. With a wider variety of materials, these are also suited to smaller spaces, adding to their popularity. The flex-back or push back recliner is considered to be more of a top line product and like the name suggests, pushing back in the seat gets the chair to recline. Many people find that getting an ottoman is a great way to get the most from this type of recliner.

Fabric is another thing you need to look at. It’s not hard to find variations in leather and leather and vinyl combinations. For the active household where there will be a lot of use and children on the recliner, Microfiber is another option that is durable and stain resistant.
