Pharmacy assistant

Like a few other occupations tied to an aging population, the position of pharmacy assistant is set to grow over the next few years as the Baby Boomer generation gets older and their need for prescription drugs increases. In fact, American numbers state the job will grow by 25% in the years leading up to 2018 and the numbers for Canada are expected to follow in a similar fashion. There’s also the thought that medical companies will see the opportunity with that generation and there will be an influx of new drugs on the market as well.

If you’re looking at starting a rewarding career as a pharmacy assistant there are several areas you’ll need to be familiar with. Along with Pharmacology and a knowledge of Community & Hospital Systems & Procedures, you’ll need to have some honed communication skills, including listening skills, to deal with colleagues and customers.

The experts will tell you that people often say they’re listening when they’re thinking about what they’re going to say next. Staying focused is an important part of good listening. Often repeating back what others are saying helps to let them know you’ve heard them. Effective use of grammar is another point that you’ll need to master if you haven’t already been able to. Here it’s necessary to master techniques such as sentence structure and punctuation so that you can effectively communicate in a written manner.

Remember that your career as a pharmacy assistant will at least partially entail answering telephones and inventory. Communicating in a clear concise way both verbally and in writing is an essential element for success.
